Truly Seeing the Wilderness
Through the eyes and ears of my dogs, I encounter a vibrant and exciting world I might not otherwise notice. As my malamutes and I run trails in the national forests near our home, we are shadowed by wolves; we startle a moose who swims across an alpine lake where his mate awaits, or a fawn who dashes through the close-growing trees to his mother; we observe the footprints and scat of fox, coyotes and wolves, of rabbits and voles, of deer and elk; we are shepherded along our path by the wingbeat and calls of ravens, robins, eagles and hawks; we seek out burbling streams to slacken our thirst; we reluctantly turn for home, refreshed in mind and spirit.
